Random things I wish I knew before my first rehearsal:
- Abanico is very important and is played many times through the tune.
- Modern players seem to ignore neck/mouth bell voicing, but usually play close to the neck
for sound consistency (“that stuff is for bongo players” as our director said)
- Play extended fill on every first pregon (usually twice per song).
- Play two hits on 4-& before piano solo.
